I like my “home”

Again over at the blog At The Well there is yet another wonderful message.

Your Home…..do you like spending time at home or are you always looking for something to do to get you out of your house?
I like my house..sometimes I get bored..but I always have cleaning or projects to do..I just get lazy and dont want to do anything. But in general I like my home. I like the decor..We could have a few less deers in the living room..but Gregg likes it. Of course I’m not done decorating my home…That takes years and I think you are never really done decorating your home.

But move past the decor and the cleaning that I need to be doing and think about the atmosphere of my home..and what it makes Gregg and Lyla feel like. I wonder if they enjoy being home.

Here is a little excerpt from the At the Well blog that struck me….

The first step has to be the vision, the view of home as engineered society, private utopia, the one little corner of the planet where the culture is entirely up to you and your husband. The culture of the home will reflect the ideas of the people who live there, and no one’s ideas influence the culture more strongly than the wife and mother’s. ***whew that was it…I need to have my ideas concrete..my thoughts have to be concrete…if Lyla has a question…I need to have an answer and a why…Here’s a good thought…”Am I watering a weed or an oak seedling?” Am I just sliding ideas by Lyla and letting her decided for herself what she wants to believe in at 2 years old and just watering a weed in her world..or do I have my stuff together and know I what I believe in and think about issues so when she asks me I can water an oak seedling that will forever stay with her..that someone like the wind can’t come along and blow down….If you struggle with being at home, or even if you don’t, it might be time to sit down and ask yourself what your ideas about home are and then what your ideals for life are. How can you create a home that is exactly what you and your family most need? How can you turn your ideals into a cultural blueprint? What should life in your home look like, and how can you make it happen?

Do you want a home full of peacefulness or bustling activity? Is it quiet or full of music or laughter? Who is there all day? Is it children, the elderly, neighbors, family? What do you want to learn about? What do you want to produce? If you find yourself wishing to be out of your home, what is it that you want to do? How could you make your home a center for that kind of work?

I hope you readers got a little bit out of this…because I got a whole lot….

I always wanted to be a momma…it is the best thing I ever done…and I wouldn’t change anything…but I guess it is just hitting me that the “momma” is the center of the home…she is the glue…she is the load bearing wall to her house…

Have a Blessed Day!

What are you going to do for Earth Day?

I want every one that reads this to commint to at least one thing from the list below (that you do not already do) in honor of this year’s Earth Day, April 22nd.

Earth Day – What You Can Do

Learn to reuse, recycle, rethink

Earth Day is the perfect time to think outside the box. What are the consequences of our choices? What products are better for the earth? What should we avoid?

Just as you might suspect, there’s more to saving the earth than putting newspapers in a recycling container once a week.

Our product choices, packaging, reusing, and recycling are all areas that affect our homes. Some of the things we can do will take very little time. Other choices will require research, persistence, and conscious effort.

When building or remodeling our homes, for example, we can use earth friendly products including flooring made of cork or bamboo — both renewable resources.

Knowledge is power when learning to save the earth, so here are some of the things all of us can do…

A Dim Bulb – Your local hardware store probably sells a regular incandescent bulb for $2 or $3. Compare that to a compact flourescent bulb that sells for about $15.00. No contest you say? Think again. Experts say you may buy 10 or more of the cheaper bulbs over ten years, compared to only one of the more expensive type. Now which looks better? 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Earth recommends using compact flourescent bulbs with solid state ballasts that fit into a regular light bulb socket, using 1/4 of the energy of an incandescent bulb while generating the same amount of light.

The Running Faucet – Do you leave the water running while you brush your teeth for 2 minutes? Then nearly ten gallons of water just slid down the drain. Remember, you PAY for that! Now, think about saving water when you shave, wash dishes, do laundry, water the lawn, wash the car, hose off the sidewalks…. avoid sending water and $$$ down the drain.

Idle Time – Ever wonder if you should leave the car running while you wait for the kids to be dismissed from school? Leave it on if you’ll be there less than a minute, otherwise it’s more efficient to turn it off and restart it when you’re ready to go.

Turn Down the Heat – Not just the furnace, but the water heater too — set it at 130 to 140 degrees. Turn the setting to low or off when you leave for the weekend or for a long vacation, then put a note on your bathroom mirror so you’ll remember to turn it up when you return.

Keeping It Clean – Washers can use more than 50 gallons of water per load, so avoid washing a lot of small loads whenever possible. Also, be sure to choose the lowest level of water needed for each load, use warm water instead of hot, and set the rinse cycle to use cold water.

Cold Food – Refrigerator temperatures should be set at about 40 degrees, give or take a degree or two. Freezer temps between 0 and 5 degrees are just right. Colder settings waste energy and won’t help food.

Snip Six-Pack Rings – Those innocent looking soft plasting holders for soft drink cans and other products can entangle birds, fish, and small animals. Snip apart each ring before throwing it in the trash, or inquire whether they can be recycled locally.

Get a Charge out of ItNever throw spent batteries in the trash. They contain mercury, a hazardous substance that will leak into groundwater or be burned and released into the air. Don’t go there. Either switch to rechargeable batteries or collect used batteries in a shoebox out in the garage, clearly marked. Then take them to a recycling facility once or twice a year.

Styrofoam Lasts a Really, Really, REALLY long time – Try 500 years. Or more. Think about millions of burger boxes, packing peanuts, and take-out containers, sitting in landfills, not biodegrading. Then buy eggs in cardboard, rather than styrofoam, containers.

Office Paper – Does your office recycle? Chances are it generates a vast amount of clean paper waste. Ask your building management about recycling programs. If none are in place, then put boxes (marked “Recycled Paper Only”) under every desk and next to copiers. Arrange to have a recycler pick them up or take them to a recycling facility periodically.

Sticker Shock – As fuel prices increase it will be even smarter to own fuel-efficient vehicles. Check the mileage ratings when you buy a car and compare the efficiency of your favorite models before you purchase. If gas goes up to $6.00 a gallon, which one will you want to have in your garage?

Use Cloth Instead – Carry cloth shopping bags. Use rags or towels instead of paper towels for cleaning. And yes — consider using cloth diapers for your baby at least some of the time. Not conviced? Read this diaper essay from About’s Environmental Guide.

Reuseable and Unbleached – Store food in bowls or Tupperware that can be reused endlessly. Use unbleached coffee filters (not bleached). Use more waxed paper that is biodegradable (instead of foil and plastic wrap).

Recycle Paper – Newspapers, junk mail, office papers, corrugated boxes, and paper bags are just a few of the items that can be recycled. Use local recycling facilities or call local authorities to learn about recycling options.

Recycle Glass, Plastic, and Cans – Get your local recycling requirements for these items and recycle every them every day. Collect cans and bottles when you travel, when you picnic, or eat a drive-ins. Recycle what you can.

Paint Tips – Oil based paints are toxic. They cannot be thrown out in the trash, but require special “hazardous waste” handling available at most recycling facilities. Call for instructions and collection dates. Use latex paint instead. To dispose of excess latex paint, leave the can uncovered to allow evaporation, then pull out the hardened paint and recycle the can. Never pour paint on the ground or wash brushes outside, as the runoff can contaminate groundwater.

Bag Lady – Recycle both paper and plastic shopping bags. Decline bags for smaller purchases such as stamps, greeting cards, etc. Or, better still, carry a lightweight cloth or string bag.

Arbor Day – Here’s the best idea of all: Plant a tree, or two, or even three. They’re beautiful, they provide shade, consume CO2 (that’s good), and they produce oxygen. Breathe it in. Then go plant a tree.

What to do with fevers?

thermometer.jpg thermometer image by Cat_Marie

As always I have to check The Stir on Cafemom everyday.
It is kinda like a mini blog site…there are different bloggers there that blog about different topics all throughout the day. And sometimes…it can be just goofy stuff that I really have no interest in reading…or something that is good just to read and not really tell anyone about…but today I came across a pretty good article…

what to do when your toddler has a fever?

I know everytime Lyla has a fever I automatically think “teething”….so I just watch it…and wonder what would be a “too high” fever for teething. The highest her fever has ever gotten was 102.7…and by that time I was already if “freak out” mode. Like ready to call the chopper in and have her air lifted to get her fever down. But as a first time momma..you just don’t know…you hear soooo many things from soooo many different people…once your child gets a fever you try to remember what everyone has told you and you start to think……..ok….so and so said that 102 was ok…..no…..wait ….or was that $1.02 was ok to get a Dr Pepper for me..Oh Jesus I don’t know!!
You start stressing!

Back to my topic..I came across this article and found it very helpful…so I am going to share it with you!!

This is a mom’s story ..kinda like mine about fevers.

My son was just diagnosed with an ear infection and a fever of 103 so we went to the doctor and we were sent on our way with a strawberry-tasting antibiotic I would sneak into his favorite yogurt drinks for the next 10 days. He was on his way to getting better, right? Wrong. My little man spiked 105.1 fever. After panicking for five seconds, I got myself moving.

Here’s what my pediatrician told me to do (and to always do if a toddler spikes a fever higher than 103):

1. Administer Motrin.

2. Call your Ped (yes, even after hours — leave a message with the answering service).

3. Run a bath. A luke warm bath. You might think cold, but that will cause your child to shiver and shivering will raise the fever.

4. After the bath, dress the child in a diaper/training pants/undies and a loose fitting T-shirt. Take his temp again. If he’s still over 103 after the medication and bath, get to the ER — just go.

5. Something else to try that worked for us: Wrap bags of frozen veggies in dish towels and place them on the child’s back, between his legs and under his arm pits.

I hope you found this just as helpful as i did!!

I actually won something!!

Last week over at my new fav blog At the Well they had a Spring Give a Way all week long. They had different categories and different prizes. A bunch of prizes. To win one all you had to do was comment on what category was your favorite and why. Of course mine was Reflections of the Home because I am a new Stay at Home Mommy! My to do list on what I want to do to my house has grown alot longer in the past three weeks! And what is hilarious..is I still have laundry to do!!! That is my least favorite chore!!

Anyway on to the good news..I actually won something from thier give a ways! It is a planner. Some of you might not get as excited as I am over a planner but if you know me then you know I have to stay organized! I can’t handle chaotic things. So planners are a gift from God to me!! And I have been beating myself up thinking if I should take the huge step to and try to sell Pampered Chef products …so tonight at church I prayed and prayed and told God that I have no idea what he has planned for me. Obviously the preschool wasn’t in his grand scheme of things for my life and all I can say to that is THANK YOU JESUS!! That place was stressful and brought the worst out in me. So I asked God to really let me know that I can hand it all over…that he does love me enough to take care of me….that he won’t let my family suffer….it is very hard for me to let “go” and let someone else have control over my life. I have always been an independant person and hate asking for help for anything. I always feel like I need to do it on my own.

Ok ……so humor me and my ADD for a minute……because this is way off subject….but tonight Brother Jameson preached a great great great message to us. One of my favorites that I have ever heard. I never lost focus all the way through the sermon…and we all know with some preachers ..that can be rough. But tonight was awesome…he said when he got up to preach he had no clue who he was supposed to preach this to..but as soon as he was done…a woman ran straight to the front to sit on the alter so I guess it was for her…but I think alot of it was for me too. I got alot out of it. I am not the kind of person that runs up to the front of the chruch building….I just stay in my place and be quiet. But he made us realize that we matter. It doesn’t matter what you have, what you’ve done, who you are, what your reputation is, what people think of you…you matter…..to Jesus..and that…..is all that matters….really. He made us…we are his workmanship…and he takes great pride in us so that makes us special and it makes us matter. God has no qualms looking our enemy dead in the eye and sticking up for us…because that is how much we matter to him. Isn’t that great!? I loved it! He also said a little piece about how he was supposed to tell someone that whoever is worried about thier future, don’t know what’s going to happen…that God does…so pretty much just chill. He has it all mapped out.

So………….

to me..winning a planner…which the Pampered Chef told me I should get so I can record my shows and keep up with all my dates….kinda lets me know that this might be what I should be doing. If this works out for me..I could be home with Lyla and help make a little money for the household. Or just make a few extra shopping dollars

OK……..so where was I even going with this post?????????  oh yea…the planner……so here is the planner:

The website is called Chaos Simplified …cute huh? and it is something like $28….crazy huh??

Moving on…another reason I am so excited is because I never win anything……….so THANK YOU AT THE WELL!!!!!

beautiful weather=great family time

The past few days here in Arkansas have just been lovely! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, it is the epitomy of a great day!
Lyla has been in sundresses and flip flops and we have been outside most of everyday.
My mom bought her some sidewalk chalk so now our driveway is covered in chalk. But I love it! You can see all her little drawings. I took a picture of them because I think they are precious! She also has a swing that you hang in the tree and one day she took a nap outside in her swing. :) So while she was alseep I pulled some weeds outside.  She is getting so big that we are also taking walks together. We will walk right across the street to the sidewalk and walk a little ways down and then back up to the house..and she thinks we went really far and gets so excited!

Spending all this time outside has gave us great family time and time for me to realize that my baby girl is growing up. You always hear parents say that…”Oh they grown so fast” But to look at a picture of Lyla two months ago and now…is a major difference.

Two months ago:
she could only babble..no real words
she has way less hair
She loved to be held and carried

Now:
she says sentences…like…Daisy do you want to eat? or Mom I want a drink or I want my movie
her hair is getting so long it almost goes in a ponytail
she doesn’t want to be carried or held anymore…a finger to hold will be just fine
she takes care of our dogs…helps feed and water them and take them outside
she is starting to use the potty like a big girl

it is so crazy! I’m so excited for this summer and getting to spend all the time I can with her!!!

Pilots flying depressed but on meds

So the FAA has just made a ruling on pilots flying while they are depressed as long as they are taking one of four medications.

Would you jump on a metal ship that went up 35,000ft with someone who was on medication for depression…or would you rather fly with a pilot that was depresssed with no meds????
let me know what you think?

It used to be where if the pilot was depressed then they could not fly…period.
I mean think about it…if they are depressed…what’s a better way to kill yourself then up in the sky doing what you love…have nothing but time passing you by so you can sit and ponder on what your depressed about then decide to kill yourself and take all the passengers down with you!! Crazy!!!
But then again..who knows how medication effects any certain person so would you rather your depressed pilots be on meds while your up in the air? again..Crazy!!!!

I think they are making a new regulation saying the pilot has to be on one of the four meds for up to a year then they can seek thier license back to fly. That would be a good thing..I can handle that!

But with the other two options…wow….i don’t know….I say drive!!!

I want this…

The clip clock!

It is here at a store called The Afternoon

someone buy that for me!! That will just feed my organization fetish!!!

In a blogging mood…

so look out…I have found cute pictures and good info!!

So this was over at Cute Overload

How cute are they? But the Humane Society just put out an announcemen the other stating that they want to sway people from buying chicks and bunnies for gifts for Easter because they do grow up and do have to be taken care of…and most of the time they are given back to the Humane Society. But they are precious to look at!!!

Over here at This Site there is good info on bullying…I don’t like bullying..and I think it could be very dangerous…and very detrimental to a child self esteem. A child’s self esteem is major is thier life….a good self esteem will develop a well rounded person…a bad self esteem will develop problems such as obesity, depression, etc…
On that site it lists the laws in Arkansas concerning bullying. It goes as far as no bullying on the computer, at a school designated bus stop, school events…wow! That makes me smile! I hope and pray everyone can just get along! It is sad to say that bullying isn’t in just middle school and high school…bullying can be anywhere…for example your workplace. Maybe one day we can get a law passed where your employer can not bully employees…that will open up some bosses eyes!! Just because you own a business doesn’t make you God’s gift to humanity!

Here is the definition of bullying:

“A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself.”

This definition includes three important components:

1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.
2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.
3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength.

If you see someone being bullied..report it to your teacher!! It’s not fair..every student should have a wonderful time in school..that is where most of thier day is spent! Let’s just all be nice and get along!!

a few pictures

I am really to tired to blog today..but I really want to keep up my blogging…I know important people read it now!! So I want to keep them interested!!
So to update my blog..I’m just gonna throw a few pictures out and that will have to do for today. Tomorrow I don’t have to go to college so maybe during Lyla’s naptime I will write whatever comes to mind.
